From Slavery To Freedom

The presented chapter talks about the path to disfranchisement, segregation, and confronting the urban color line as well as America’s empire of color and the pattern of violence. The path to disfranchisement highlights the challenges faced including the prevention of blacks to vote legally. The chapter comprehensively covers the aspect of black voting rights by providing events leading to it including the mention of the rise of conservative Democrats. The inclusion of the variety of means used to prevent the blacks from voting as well as the black reappearance in politics depicts the conclusive nature of the chapter in trying to explain the path to disfranchisement. There is the elaboration of some of the facts to expound on some of the stated points where a rural black man “freely” exercises the right to vote. The use of the image is to increase the understanding of the reader considering that pictures improve the understanding of the issue in question since it provides an additional perspective an individual can use to understand the communicated message.

The presented themes in the chapter can be found on the radical agrarian movement where black and white farmers drifted together under radical agrarianism. The establishment of the Colored farmers’ union signified a step thus highlighting the theme of progress in their path to disfranchisement. There is also the mention of the creation of Populist Party that formed a political agency for the resurgent farmers aiming to win black votes and secure black franchise. The inclusion of the struggles the farmers went through is an indication that the chapter wants its readers to understand it.

The chapter uses additional information from other sources as well as examples of cases to explain the legalization of segregation. The use of the Plessy v. Ferguson is one of the examples where the 1895 Supreme Court upheld segregation doctrine of separate but equal. The chapter goes ahead and provides a handwritten decision to show its extensive research as well as the talking points of the case and what contributed to the conclusion of the case.

The implications presented in the chapter include the friction that could arise should disfranchisement be fulfilled where disagreements arose with many poor whites afraid that they would be disqualified. There is also the Mississippi plan that included the suffrage amendment for disfranchisement setting a precedent for several other states including polling tax and the disqualification of convicts and requiring people to read and understand the constitution. It signifies that the path was not easy and requires effort and commitment from all the involved parties to ensure its success.

Confrontation of the urban color line forms another theme in the chapter where it presents information on the progress the blacks made in urban cities through the provision of more economic social opportunities as well as employment and the establishment of unions. The theme signifies the progress of the blacks in their quest for equality. The previous eras had witnessed the blacks struggle to find jobs, form and join unions or even find the best houses because of the segregation that existed. There is also the provision of examples to justify America’s empire of color by mentioning the United States’ victory over Spain that resulted in establishing the country as a world power.

The presented themes in the chapter are significant as it contributes to the understanding of the paths to disfranchisement through the provision of all the events that took place as Blacks sought to disfranchise. However, the theme of a pattern of violence that highlights the violence that took place in some of the cities within the country led to Roosevelt facing criticism for not providing members a full and fair trial.
